Breaking into Fortress Europe – Wednesday 23rd November 6.30pm

On the final night of the UCL European Focus Week we are addressing challenges to EU Asylum Policy and the case of Lampedusa- one of the most prominent examples of “Fortress Europe” Especially with tens and thousands of refugees arriving from North Africa in the after math of so-called the Arab Spring, this topic is of continues to be a pressing issue and to divide Europe: Who bears responsibility for the migrants arriving on this Italian island? How should the European Union respond to this?

You don’t need to be an expert in law to attend as the evening begins with a short introduction by Dr. Ingrid Boccardi (UCL ESPS/Law) on EU Asylum Policy and the tensions between the right to free movement and the right of nation states to control their borders.

This will be followed by the screening of “Final Destination Lampedusa”- an award winning documentary on the smuggling of so-called illegal immigrants and the controversial detention centres on Lampedusa.

This event will take place in Anatomy JZ Young LT

As for all our film nights, complimentary drinks and snack will be provided.
